【摘要】:Waterflowinnatureexertsaforceonsoilsthatresultsinerosion.Erosionpotentialofasoilisofconcerninvegetatedchannels,roadembankments,dams,levees,spillways,constructionsites,etc.Thejetindexmethodisintendedtoprovideastandardmethodofexpressingerosionresistance;toassistthosewhoworkwithdifferentsoilsandsoilconditionstomeasureerosionresistancefordesignpurposes;andtoprovideacommonsystemofcharacterizingsoilpropertiestodevelopperformanceandpredictionrelationships.Thejetindextestisnotsuitedfordeterminingerodibilityofsoilsthathavestructurecharacteristicslargerthanthescaleofthejettestingdevice.Forexample,theerodibilityofsoilthathasadominantsoilstructureof7to8cmorlarger(thatis,aggregate,clod,orparticlesize),thatmightplayakeyroleinthedetachmentprocess,shouldnotbeestimatedwiththejetindextest.Careshouldbetakenthatthetestsampleandtestarerepresentativeofexpectedconditionsatthesiteunderinvestigation.Ifitisknowninadvancethatthesoilwillbesaturatedpriortoanerosionevent,thenthesoilshouldbetestedinthatcondition.Atpresent,theeffectsofwaterchemistryondetachmentrateareunknown.Therefore,waterqualityduringtestingshouldbesimulatedascloseaspossibletothewaterqualityanticipatedduringactualerosion.Note18212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythisstandardisdependuponthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingit,andthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetestingandsampling.UsersofthisstandardarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thistestmethodcoverstheestimationoferodibilityofasoilbyajetindexmethod.Thistestmethodinvolveseitherpreparingafieldsiteorobtainingarelativelyundisturbedsoilsampleandthesubsequentactivitiesforthedeterminationoftheerodibilityofsoil.Thistestmethodalsomayberunoncompactedsamplesinthelaboratory.1.2ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
